Project:
To conduct a mid-term review and revision of the Pacific Islands Meteorological Strategy (PIMS)
Client:
Secretariat of the Pacific Environment Programme (SPREP)
Participants:
SPREP, WMO, Pacific Meteorological Council (PMC) , UNDP, The national governments of Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Kiribati (including National Meteorological Services and National Aviation Authorities), Fiji Airways, NOAA, BoM, SPC, NIWA, CSIRO, APCC, International Federation of Red Cross, University of the South Pacific (USP), World Vision and USAID.
Timeframe:
2016-2017
What the project involved:
PSS consulted stakeholders across the several countries including government and private agencies, as well as NGOs, community groups and academic institutions as well as key regional bodies to identify the priorities of Pacific Island Countries’ and Territories’ (PICTs) National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) from 2017-2026. The Strategy is for PICTs’ governments and NMHSs, donors and partners. It is a guide to priorities for strengthening weather, climate, water and ocean services for all stakeholders through timely provision of information on climate change and warnings for extreme events.
The Pacific Meteorological Council (PMC) adopted the Pacific Islands Meteorological Strategy (PIMS) 2012–2021 to ensure that NMHSs have the capacity to fulfill their responsibilities over the decade. The revised PIMS 2017–2026 draws upon the advice of NMHSs, their clients and their partners to update its objectives, recognising that national, regional and international contexts have changed, and that much has been achieved since 2012.
PIMS was endorsed by the 4th PMC meeting in August 2017.
